3 Ways to Move From Unconscious to Conscious Thinking

Have you ever done something and looked back and wondered why the heck it happened? For instance – ever eat too much and wonder why you didn’t stop at that first helping?  Or ever get back from shopping and know that you spent more than what you had planned on spending? What has been the answer to the “Why?”? I would be willing to bet that the answer is often, “I don’t know”; or “I guess I just wasn’t thinking!”. And these are the answers IF the question is even asked.

We are very busy; there never seems to be enough time in a day. The list of things that we want to get done often never get touched. We are rushing here and rushing there; taking care of the home, our jobs and our families.

This week the topic of unconscious verses conscious thinking came up in several areas of my life. What is unconscious thinking? This is when we are not aware of the thoughts that are going through our heads. Our inner intuitive voice gets shut out and is rarely heard during this kind of thinking.

While thought is unconscious our decisions become decisions that we would not make had we been actually THINKING. If we aren’t really THINKING we make bad decisions. Good decisions are made when we can see and recognize the consequences. If we are thinking unconsciously, we aren’t asking ourselves what will happen IF.  We don’t even think in terms of consequences.  Part of personal development and improvement of our lives requires that we find out how to always be conscious and mindful of our thoughts. Thoughts create things!

We can eat healthier if we consciously eat: we will recognize when we are not hungry any longer; we will make better and healthier food decisions. (Read “Mindless Eating” by Brian Wansink for some interesting insights to other things that occur while eating without thinking)

We will be more productive if we consciously make decisions: instead of hitting that snooze button we will recognize that it is better for us to get an early start on the day. Waking up a little bit early to exercise or meditate, or get started on a project will ensure our success in reaching goals.

We will communicate better if we are thinking consciously when we speak to others: if we are fully present in our conversations we will recognize when others may not hear us the way we intended.  If we recognize these misunderstandings early we can improve all of our releationships.

3 Methods to move from Unconscious to Conscious thinking

Be in the now: While your mind is thinking about the future your unable to pay close attention to what is going on with you now.  While you are beating yourself (or others) up over the past your now will be gone – wasting energy and not focusing on and ensuring your now is perfect.  Not being in the now only sets you up for continuing the cycle of worrying about the future and “what if’-ing” about the past.

Meditate: Meditation has been proven to slow ones thinking down. Meditating will help you suddenly find spaces between your thoughts that had not been there before, giving you time to make the decisions that are right for you, making sure you start hearing your inner intuitive voice.

Slow Down: I heard this week that we often feel that life is about nouns and verbs, but if we look at life being about the punctuation, the periods, the commas and exclamation points we can pause and not only enjoy what the experience is at the moment but make room for the conscious thinking that helps us improve our lives.

I would love to hear other techniques on how you have been able to start slowing down enough to think consciously – Please feel free to comment!

Catching Up and Making a Change

My last blog in this category was entered two months ago. I was writing about week two of my journey of moving from the corporate rat race to owning my own business. I have come to the conclusion that the reason why I stopped blogging on this category was due to the fact that I was writing about things that had occurred a couple weeks (or more) prior. What I have decided to do is catch up with what I have been doing and where I am today and then go forward writing about what is going on in current terms.

Although I often do not feel I have gotten that much done the small actions every day have added up. I have done the following since my Sept 3 posting:

Web page: The purpose of this site is to sell coaching, products and provide recommended reading.
Training: I have gone through training for Squidoo, landing pages, Ezine articles and writing for pull (how to put together an article)
Articles: I have posted 4 Squidoo and 1 E-Zine articles
Ads: Learned how to place free ads through several websites.
Blogging: Am posting new releases for books that others interested in personal development may find interesting as well as posting book reviews as I finish reading books.
Affiliate: Have signed up for several affiliate associations which should help monetize going forward.
Autoresponders: I have gone through training and selected the application I will use going forward.
RSS Feeds: Learned about these and got my blog set up in several trackers.
Social Networking: Use Facebook and Twitter to build relationships; created a class that can be delivered
Synergy Training: Attended Lifepath Synergy training in Arizona.
E-Book: Have started writing my E-Book on goal setting.
Target Market Work: Took time and brainstormed and narrowed down my target market
Denver Waldorf School: Am chair of a subcommittee on PR and am on the Board of Trustees. Attended several events with my daughter.
Personal Development: Fished the 56 Days to Discovery, several books and listening to several MP3s.
Corporate J.O.B.: Work a full time job that changed during this time frame, so I am learning a new area of the business. Resigned my position with Qwest Women so that I could balance my life.

So, as I review all that has gotten done in just a few months I do feel much better. This proves to myself that it really is about taking small actions toward goals.

One of the best things that I have found is the training I found through Renegade University . They have assisted by laying out a plan of attack as well as given great step by step training. They teach attraction marketing. They take you step by step from looking at and determining what your target market is and then has a plan that takes you step by step through a set of training that gets students up and running. I highly recommend this training!

I have also gone through numerous emotions in the last few months. Although there was a very high level of excitement in the very beginning as time has moved on, my level of excitement has been contained. Don’t get me wrong, I am still very excited. There are many positive feelings – more positive than negative but… there have been negative feelings.

Guilt
I go in and out of feelings and thoughts of guilt. Thoughts that I am not doing enough for the business, thoughts that I am not doing enough at my corporate J.O.B. often go through my mind. At times when this happens I keep thinking about what I ultimately want. I know that I am someone that has always gone over and beyond at what I do and where I am at and I know I can’t do that at everything in my life right now. I have to let some things just be.

Fear
I know fear is a normal feeling when moving out of a comfort zone and doing something new, something unknown. I have definitely felt this as I move forward. I think there are times that my fear keeps me doing some of the right actions to get me moving closer to my goal; it is really easy to fall back into the comfort zone. Especially when I was told I would be moving to a new job within my corporate J.O.B. the fun of learning something new definitely had my mind moving away from my ultimate goal.

Anger
There has been anger at myself. Thoughts that I might have jumped into something too quickly have entered. If I would have spent some of the money on getting the business up and running then perhaps I would be further along. There has been anger at my up line due to some feelings that they have not paid me one iota of attention (after my sending them the money for signing up). The training from them was minimal – there WAS training and it WAS great to have and get. I listen to what other associates are getting and wonder why I am not getting it, I wonder if others are getting more training and included in things that I have not been. I know that my up line had given leads to others (I was one of these) – but I have not gotten that. I then popped out of this negative emotion and realized only I can make this a success. It doesn’t matter what others are getting and if I am missing out on something others are getting.

There is no room for blaming others, I need to take responsibility for my decisions and my actions. I have chosen to do this business and want to do it in such a way that I am branding ANDREA and that has taken some time. Although I could have put all the dollars I have invested into calling leads I have made a decision that this is not the way of the future of selling on the internet and it is especially not how I feel comfortable and not the way I want to sell. I want to establish relationships and give people full training and value. I want it to be Right From the Heart!

End of Week One – My Discovery Starts

This post continues my written journey as I began seriously working on my purpose and passion.

It is Saturday, Day 7 of my journey and this ends week one. In one weeks time I have moved from focusing on moving up the corporate ladder and arranging my life and daily activity so that I was meeting the right people and doing the right things within the corporate world to deciding to start my own business. Wow – huge difference and this is a huge step for me. I am 100% certain about this decision and this move not because there is guaranteed returns; not because of promises but because it feels right. Starting my own business, I know with every ounce of who I am, is the path that I am to take in order to live the life of following my dreams. I am passionate about personal development and I love helping others become all that they can be, helping them improve their lives and themselves. I love being in a community of people that enjoy the challenge of becoming more of who we can become. I have found this with this new venture and am thrilled to be associated with them.

I have FINALLY received the long awaited Discovery package from Lifepath Unlimited and am so excited to get started. I opened it up and was immediately impressed with the packaging. It was very well done. The CDs and the DVD and journal all come well packed in a lovely package. (As time goes on I find out that they are extremely into the details!) I watch the movie: The Awakening. It is so inspiring! It is very like the movie The Secret but where The Secret tells everyone there is a secret and they can create their own life; The Awakening tells you HOW to begin doing it. I also started listening to the first CD (out of a set of 8). The following are some of my favorite quotes directly from this first CD which is basically about Law of Attraction and Allowing.

You are both the teacher and the seeker.
When you are inspired by some great purpose – you find yourself in a new and wonderful world.
Your passions are like breadcrumbs leading you to your destiny.
Do what makes you come alive.
Purpose and passion are the most important ingredients to accomplishing your dreams.
Let other’s resistance feed your desire and motivation.
Sometimes to listen to your intuition you must lose your mind.
Why are Mondays usually worse than Friday? Because that is the vibration we put out there.
Step 1 – Identify your desire; Step 2 – Get clear on what you desire most passionately; Step 3 – Give your desire attention
Keep your attention on that which you choose to create
Avoid the words DON’T, NOT, and NO
Celebrate the matches. Keep a log or journal of things that you are attracting.

One thing that I noticed is that as I consciously realized I was deciding to take this path because of my passion the universe started aligning with those thoughts and I started hearing all kinds of things around passion and purpose. Over the past years, I have had a difficult time getting in touch with ME and determining what my passions were. I had a difficult time deciphering between passion, purpose, vision and goals. I had several different teachers help with my process of REALLY understanding what these words meant and it has taken me months to put together. Some of the key teachers were; Napoleon Hill, Jim Rohn, Bob Proctor, and Gary Ryan Blair (The Goals Guy). I would get confused when I would hear someone teach something that conflicted with something else I had heard. I might be the only one with this problem. (Maybe it is because part of me looks at things so analytically and I often try to make things black and white to spite the knowledge that everything is gray!) The following is what I have put together to help me with defining MY passion, purpose, vision and goals.

Passion: Passion is the things that you absolutely love to do. Your passion makes you fly out of bed in the morning. What special gifts and talents do you have? Often, not always, what you are good at are things that you also love.

Purpose: Your purpose is the reason you are here. Your purpose is to do what you are passionate about. Your purpose in this life is to do what you love. If you have difficulty determining this then you will probably not be as happy as you can be. You won’t get be able to get into the rhythm of life. Your purpose wakes you up before the alarm clock; you are excited to get involved with your purpose. Purpose leads to a vision.

Vision: This is what you are doing with your life. This comes after you have got the right purpose. This is the strategy. This is the total journey you are taking. You’re your vision is clear, you can start setting goals.

Dreams: These are the list of things you desire. Releasing weight, having all your bills paid off, owning your own business, traveling to Greece. All of those are dreams.

Goals: Goals are step by step actions that help you realize your vision and dreams.

I am passionate about my family, developing myself and others. My purpose is to create a life where I am growing, spending quality time with my family and working with personal development daily. My vision entails learning how to market on the internet and how to attract people who are looking for the same thing I have found. I have so many dreams – they have all been written down. I found a great method on managing my day to day steps to reaching my goals which I will share with everyone soon.

This week marks the first week of a huge change for my life and I feel honored that you are sharing the challenges, joy and excitement with me! Next week I start my 56 Days to Discovery program and continue getting my business up and running.
